About United Methodist Neighborhood Centers
"Then those sheep are going to say, Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink. And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you? Then the King will say, I'm telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me - you did it to me."
- Matthew 25:37-40
Whether it’s providing a safe, nurturing environment for children at its downtown child development center, assisting individuals in need of food or financial aid, making the holidays a little brighter for area families, or helping African refugees build a better tomorrow for themselves, UMNC is dedicated to compassionate and loving service.

UMNC programs include:
  • Miriam Child Development Center: This full-service, top-flight day care for children aged 6 weeks to 12 years focuses on helping them develop both emotionally and academically through a hands-on curriculum, stimulating activities and active parental involvement.

  • Refugee Economic Independence Program (REIP): This flagship program helps African refugee women and children learn English, receive academic or job training, and benefit from mentoring/tutoring designed to help them assimilate into American society and create a stable financial base for their family.

  • Social Services: Food, clothing and financial assistance are provided to families in need through six Social Service Centers throughout Shelby County. The annual holiday food and toy drives benefit thousands of residents - especially the children of Memphis.

  • Susanna Wesley Senior Day Care and Alzheimer’s Center: Scheduled to open in late 2008, the Wesley Center will offer compassionate, therapeutic weekday care for seniors who cannot afford private day care, including those suffering from Alzheimer’s who need specialized services.

Supported through private donations, grants and United Methodist Churches throughout the Memphis Conference, UMNC also benefits from the time and talents of hundreds of volunteers throughout Shelby County.
