38 children were funded by donations and sent to Summer Camp in July. The Lakeshore Summer Camp is a United Methodist Retreat Center in Eva, TN. Each Junior High and Elementary camp with transportation to and from is a seven day experience. Some of our children have never left Memphis. In a religious setting, they have opportunity to meet other children from all over Tennessee and Southern Kentucky. There is a counselor for each 5 children. Supervision therefore is very attentive yet there is optimum freedom for play, study and worship.
The children were transported during two separate weeks in UMNC vans. Snacks were provided halfway by UMNC on each to and from trip. One Junior High kid said upon leaving the camp he “hugged his counselor and cried.” Needless to say, the experience of three prepared meals, comfortable place to sleep, expressions of unconditional love and respect are rarities in their young lives.
