Dr. Elvernice “Sonny” Davis is the new interim executive director for United Methodist Neighborhood Centers (UMNC) of Memphis, an agency of the Memphis Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Mark Miesse, president of the UMNC Board of Directors, made the announcement this week.
Davis began work at the UMNC office at 3000 Walnut Grove Rd. in Memphis on Sept. 2. He will serve in a part-time capacity during a time of transition, said Miesse.
“We are who we are because we were helped when in need. We now help others in need because we were helped ourselves. I am honored to join others in mission with the help of our Lord,” said Dr. Davis about his temporary return to the position he held from 2008 to 2010.
Davis preceded and follows Rev. Brent W. Porterfield, who resigned Sept. 1 after four years of “dedicated service,” said Miesse.
“Sonny brings wonderful gifts and experience to bear for God’s mission for this agency at this vital time,” said Dr. Mark Matheny, special missioner with UMNC. “He brings the experience of a distinguished Army chaplain, senior vice president of Methodist Healthcare and former UMNC executive director.”
Davis may be contacted at UMNC at 901-323-4993.
Founded in 1907, UMNC was originally established to provide day care and outreach programs to the citizens of Memphis. More than a century later, that vision includes an early childhood ministry and programs to alleviate hunger and poverty.
