The Smith Center

The Scott Center in downtown Memphis has long been the home of the mission congregation of Holy Community United Methodist Church.

Their Mission:

Our words are a reflection of God’s words for ye shall remember us by what we say.  Our hearts are of Christ, for ye shall see Him in us.  Our minds are of the Holy Spirit, for we are in the will of God.  We are convicted to stand boldly in the face of despair, for it is not the trails of life that defeat us, but the lack of faith with which we face them.  We are examples of Christ and our ultimate purpose is to win the lives of the unaware through our testimonies of faith.

Holy Community United Methodist Church has since 1995 been active in urban outreach ministry at the Smith Center in Uptown Memphis.

WORSHIP:  Currently, worship services begins at 9:30am with a Sunday bible study beginning at 12 pm. With the help of sister churches each Sunday we serve “The Big Breakfast”.  Each 1st and 3rd Saturday every month we have Sabbath School for our kids, also provided by our sister churches.  We have “Bread of Life” Lunch on Tuesday and Thursday at 12:00 pm, which includes a short devotion prior to lunch.

OUTREACH:The Smith Center food bank is open each Tuesday and Thursday for the individuals in 38105 and 38107 zip codes which is manned by Holy Community staff and volunteers.  HCUMC also participates in the Commodity Program each 3rd Thursday. A clothes closet is also open on an as needed basis. HCUMC makes provision for shelter during the day for the women and children staying in The Missionaries of Charity Shelter.

MENTORSHIP: Holy Community also partners with Seedco Agencies to provide community service opportunities for up to 25 volunteers assisting with various jobs around the building. HCUMC also partners with Shelby County Pre-Trial and Board of Probation and Parole to provide community service workers on a daily basis from 10am until 5pm.

HEALTH: We work closely with the TENNder Care Program twice a month (They assist with signing up children with TENNCARE for dental and eye exams and checkups). We also work with United Health Care assisting adults with the insurance signup process. We also have an annual Health Fair to provide various health information and assistance to those that may otherwise not get it.

There is also an Annual Street Fair with the help of Collierville UMC, which provides food, fun and entertainment to our neighborhood individuals.

Jacob’s Well

Recently, Jacob’s Well has begun sharing the space down at the Smith Center.

Their Mission:  What distinguishes Jacob’s Well is the relationships that are developing between those who are affluent and those disenfranchised.  We seek to begin by coming to serve a meal and end by sharing a meal and sharing life.  We have discovered that our service is reciprocal as we find help for our souls in the process.
